Introduction to Steel Shot
Steel Shot is a spherical particle made of special materials through special heat treatment.
Firstly, high-quality steel blocks, filaments, and steel chips are melted, and then the molten steel is thrown into water by high-speed centrifugal forming using a centrifugal disc, causing the surface temperature of the steel shot to sharply drop and form a shot body. This is a quenching process.
The shot body after one quenching is dried and reheated and tempered in the furnace to achieve the applicable hardness. The tempered steel shot is sorted into different grades of products that meet SAE standards through mechanical screens for use in shot peening equipment.
The excellent heat treatment control process endows steel balls with the best elasticity and fatigue resistance. Steel balls with different particle sizes and hardness are suitable for different processes, such as being widely used for shot peening strengthening of large quantities and heavy components or materials.
Steel shot is widely used for descaling and rust removal of steel workpieces before coating, and centrifugal shot blasting equipment is often used in this situation.
The shape of the ball and its smaller hardness prevent the steel shot from causing significant wear on the equipment.
Steel shot is also widely used for sand cleaning of castings.
When used with appropriate equipment, steel balls are the best abrasive for surface cleaning due to their durability.
Applicable industrial scope
Aviation industry ▏The automotive industry ▏Sandblasting/painting vendors ▏Consumer goods manufacturing ▏Container manufacturing/repair ▏Casting ▏Granite/stone cutting ▏Shipbuilding and ship repair ▏Oil and gas pipelines ▏Factory maintenance and metal processing
Applicable process scope
Surface pretreatment before painting, sand cleaning, pipeline descaling, and strengthening
Moderate hardness, strong toughness, impact resistance, long service life, up to 2000-2900 cycles, good resilience, fast cleaning speed, low consumption, non crushing, fast cleaning speed, and good technical effect.
The cleanliness of the treated metal surface can reach GB/T8923-1989; Surface roughness reaches Rz=10-150 μ m. This increases the specific surface area of the metal surface, improves the surface adhesion of the coating after coating, and has significant economic benefits. It is the most advanced and ideal metal abrasive rust removal method for shot blasting cleaning and strengthening at home and abroad.
Main types
(1) Steel shot
The hardness of steel shot is generally HRC40-50. When processing hard metals, the hardness can be increased to HRC57-62. They have good toughness and a service life several times that of cast iron shot, making them widely used.
(2) Cast iron shot
The hardness of cast iron shot is HRC58-65, which is very brittle, easily broken, has a short lifespan, and is not widely used. Mainly used in areas where high shot peening intensity is required.
(3) Glass shot
The hardness of glass pellets is lower than the first two types of pellets, mainly used for stainless steel, titanium, aluminum, magnesium, and other situations where iron contamination is not allowed. It can also be used for the second treatment after steel shot peening to remove iron contamination and reduce the surface roughness of the parts.
